What was your favorite toy when you were a child?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 10, 2007:
I grew up in the most amazing place, practically perfect for any child. I spent a huge amount of time outside, and I would have to say that nature was my favorite toy. It never failed to spark my imagination, inspire my creativity, and allow me to "disappear" into a calmer, more welcoming world.
Trees where probably my favorite of favorites, followed by the river, and all the wonderful wet stones. I guess I am a bit strange, but these things brought me a wonderful joyous, artistic satisfaction, and still do :o)

That sounds very peaceful, serene, beautiful, and fun! I grew up in Minnesota, so I spent a lot of time in the woods. It was great, except for all the mosquito bites! Thanks for sharing, HumanlyPossible!
I grew up in Scotland, we call our mosquitoes “midges”. They are tiny little things, and they get EVERYWHERE. Actually though I don't remember ever being bitten when I was young, I think when you are totally absorbed in what you are doing you don't notice these things. I guess I should relearn that particular skill as an adult :)
Haha. Midges.
The outside world knows not of the horror them wee black clouds can bring.

In New England we call those bugs “no-see-ums”!!! I live int he woods now…and it is wonderful!
I grew up a country girl, surrounded by vineyards and dairies. The entire yard was like a giant toy. My best friend and constant companion in this amazing place was a white German Shepherd. My mom had this amazing garden which became a mysterious jungle to my young imagination. Under rocks I'd find communities of “roly-poly” bugs. Flowers made wonderful decorations for the dog. (Poor thing, he put up with so much nonsense from me.) Once, while conducting an “archaeological dig” for the dinosaur bones which I was sure were buried not far below the surface, I came across an unusual metal object which was obviously a relic from a past civilization. When I ran to show my mom, she informed me that it was a hose nozzle. (In my defense, it was weathered to a nice patina and was very nicely shaped, for such an ordinary object. I'm sure Indiana Jones would've made the same mistake I did.)
